Nuevo en SAPIENS: Huevos de dinosaurio, trilobites y otros fósiles han intrigado a los humanos durante cientos de miles de años, inspirando sus búsquedas creativas y su comprensión del mundo natural.

En 2020, investigadores de Israel, Egipto y Alemania estaban analizando antiguos restos de peces y métodos de pesca de la región mediterránea levantina. Los arqueólogos habían encontrado un alijo de dientes de tiburón en las capas de roca de casi 3.000 años de antigüedad del yacimiento de la Ciudad de David, en Jerusalén, y los investigadores especularon que se trataba de restos de comida de una época tan lejana como el año 900 a.C.

“Fueron traídos a Jerusalén”, dice Thomas Tütken, geocientífico de la Universidad Johannes Gutenberg de Maguncia, en Alemania, que investigó los antiguos métodos de pesca. “Pero no sabemos cómo ni por qué”. Según el arqueólogo Peter Leeming, investigador honorario de la Universidad de Exeter que ha estudiado los fósiles de las excavaciones arqueológicas, “el descubrimiento y la colección son tan antiguos como nosotros y nuestros parientes homínidos”.

Este tipo de prácticas también eran comunes en Europa. En Inglaterra, al noroeste de Londres, los arqueólogos encontraron un hacha de sílex de 400.000 años de antigüedad incrustada con un erizo de mar fosilizado que vivió hace millones de años. Esta herramienta artística fue probablemente fabricada por un miembro de la especie H. heidelbergensis. A unas 75 millas al sureste, se encontraron en una tumba una mujer y un niño Homo sapiens de 4.

Mayor, autora de dos libros sobre los primeros usos de los fósiles, afirma que existen pruebas de que los fósiles de lugares como la antigua Grecia e Israel inspiraron —o al menos confirmaron—historias y creencias tradicionales.
