New York and Los Angeles police are facing budget cuts amid nationwide demands to shift money away from law enforcement agencies to social services to help fight racial injustice

"Defund the police" has become a rallying cry of the Black Lives Matter demonstrations that erupted following the killing in custody of African-American George Floyd in Minneapolis in May.

The measure was passed in a 12-2 vote by the city council, with much of the money to be rediverted to minority areas of Los Angeles. Black Lives Matter protests swept Los Angeles and the nation following African American Floyd's death under the knee of a white police officer in Minneapolis in May.Organisers demanded the LAPD be "defunded" far beyond the scope of Wednesday's cut.

Late Tuesday, members of New York's city council approved the government's budget for the new fiscal year starting Wednesday that New York Mayor Bill de Blasio says cuts the NYPD's operating budget from about $6 billion to roughly $5 billion. Brooklyn councillor Brad Lander said he was voting no to the budget because it did not propose "real, meaningful cuts," including a hiring freeze on cops.

In Los Angeles, an Economy Built on Freelancers CrumblesCreative freelancers have been some of the hardest hit in the coronavirus-driven recession, according to economists. Performers, production crews, ride-share drivers and personal trainers were among the first to lose work and will likely be among the last to regain lost ground in the coming months, experts say. Hard to see. The gig economy was touted as the wave of the future. Prayers for these folks. Hard times for a hard-working community, with ripple effects for the whole region. Fluid ad hoc teams fuel creative industries, for a labor market that’s flexible 👍 but vulnerable 👎. Gig economy is a strength for Calif but workers have little safety net. Multiple part-time jobs, are the sad outcome of stagnant wages and astronomical education prices.
