LONDON - Countries can’t simply lock down their societies to defeat coronavirus, the World Health Organization’s top emergency expert said on Sunday, adding that public health measures are needed to avoid a resurgence of the virus later on.

“What we really need to focus on is finding those who are sick, those who have the virus, and isolate them, find their contacts and isolate them,” Mike Ryan said in an interview on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show. Much of Europe and the United States have followed China and other Asian countries and introduced drastic restrictions to fight the new coronavirus, with most workers told to work from home and schools, bars, pubs and restaurants being closed.

“Once we’ve suppressed the transmission, we have to go after the virus. We have to take the fight to the virus,” Ryan said.

I don't normally argue with health experts, but it seems that ship has sailed. I agree we need to isolate the ill but we do not have the mechanisms in place for any detection and isolate strategy. Not enough beds.

With all due respect WHO, you also said in January there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission. I think we'll listen to someone else from now on.

He didnt give any solution...

It is an important part though!

Maybe sending lions and tigers in cities can help

Here in Indiand banging bells also 🔔

Banging utensils and bells will make difference 🔔 WHO Lockdowns are definitely not enough. You must report your whereabouts and the whereabouts of your family and neighbors 24/7, or face repercussions. We know this. What we need is: 1) studies to see if who got it and is alive and in good shape is also now immune. 2) We need easy test to identify who is immune. 3) We need all people that are immune to get out of lockdown and help the community.
