Lil Baby’s ‘The Bigger Picture’ is the most streamed protest track after the death of George Floyd

The lyrics are powerful—“It's bigger than black and white/It's a problem with the whole way of life/It can't change overnight/But we gotta start somewhere,” he raps—but it’s through the song’s music video that Lil Baby immerses us in the Black experience, documenting his action in the streets. We first see the rapper, fist in the air, at a rally standing next to Atlanta City Councilman Antonio Brown wearing a “Black Lives Matter” T-shirt.

These visuals, paired with Lil Baby’s reach—an avid fan base of more than 14 million followers across Instagram and Twitterset the rapper to lead the pack during this new era of protest song, according to David Bakula, head of analytics at Nielsen Music/MRC Data. The track also propelled Lil Baby to No.

After Lil Baby’s hit, Meek Mill’s “Otherside of America” was the second most-consumed new protest song in June with almost 18 million streams, followed by Beyonce’s “Black Parade,” which surpassed 7.5 million streams in just six days. Other releases include “I Can’t Breathe” by H.E.R., “2020 Riots: How Many Times” by Trey Songz and Keedron Bryant’s “I Just Wanna Live,” which went viral and landed the 12-year-old a record deal with Warner Records. All have been featured on curated Black Lives Matter playlists across streaming platforms as listeners seek insight and catharsis from Black artists.

“We’ve become so divided as a nation, and when you get that very strong feeling of ‘our side against their side,’ you are going to get songs like this,” Bakula says. “That’s where ‘F**k tha Police’ originally came from, that feeling of ‘fight the establishment and fight for us.’”
