Snow and ice will impact parts of the South and far southern mid-Atlantic as a weather system taps into the cold air.A winter storm will bring snow and ice to parts of the South and southern mid-Atlantic to end the week, including the possibility of icing heavy enough to knock out power and cause tree damage near portions of the coastal Carolinas.Fresh arctic air supplied by high pressure behind a cold front is engulfing much of the central and eastern states right now.
In addition, ice storm warnings have been issued from the upper coast of South Carolina into coastal parts of southern North Carolina, including Myrtle Beach and Wilmington. This is where icing has the greatest chance to knock out power and cause tree damage. Some light freezing rain, sleet or snow could continue in far southern Texas, especially early in the day.Moisture leftover behind the front and also pulled in by developing low pressure along the boundary will team up with that cold air and produce snow, sleet and freezing rain over parts of the Southeast and far southern mid-Atlantic.
What's still somewhat unclear for Friday and Friday night's forecast are the finer details, including exactly which areas might see the most significant accumulations of snow, sleet and/or freezing rain. We are monitoring for any possible shifts in the track of this system that might increase or decrease the threat of snow and/or ice in some areas.
Deep freeze coming folks
