Los Angeles Police Department detectives investigating crimes that occurred during last summer’s large protests over police abuses asked business and home owners to hand over video footage recorded by their Amazon Ring security cameras, LAPD records show.
“Police could use any instance in the area — of a car break-in, a window being smashed, a trash can being turned over — in order to request 12 hours of protest footage,” said Matthew Guariglia, an EFF policy analyst who obtained the LAPD records. “Those cameras are aimed at protected activity.” A Ring spokesperson said the company’s policy “expressly prohibits” police from making requests for video of lawful activity such as protests.
As a result, Guariglia said Ring’s camera networks have “kind of become de facto CCTV networks for police departments,” without the public oversight typically required of city-owned closed circuit TV systems.
Privacy advocates. Maybe don't be outside committing crimes during a riot...just thinking out loud here...
There’s nothing wrong with asking. People can always say no.
Raising privacy concerns? People were literally breaking in to and stealing from innocent businesses. Your “privacy” is immediately out the window when committing crimes.
Bullshit , hey should use it and guilty ones should pay dearly for the damage and looting they did !,,
Can’t blame business owners who have Ring to turn over video of their damaged property. Protests are fine but doing property damage crosses the line.
Looks about white
What’s the point? You think Gascon will do anything about it? They will get a citation or probation and be right back on the streets.
I say let them have the footage if it helps them arrest those violent criminals. They destroyed people’s businesses that they worked for their entire lives. They made communities unsafe for kids. They deserve to be locked up.
