El Rancho High will host Super Quiz, the only public part of LA County Academic Decathlon, a team competition that challenges students’ knowledge and skill.

Ten seconds. That’s how long you get to answer a question on, say, World War I, or water, or society in the time of COVID or… well, just about anything you can think of.

Saturday’s competition features schools from all over L.A. County, but not L.A. Unified, which runs its own decathlon tournament and hosts its own Super Quiz next weekend. The winner of the county round goes on to the state competition in March and then the national competition in Frisco, Texas in April.

Each nine-person team must include students with A, B and C grade point averages. They need to work together and prove their mettle in 10 events: arts, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, math, music, science, social science and speech. Vying for gold, silver and bronze medals are 59 teams from 37 schools. The competition is open to public high schools in Los Angeles County, outside of tLA Unified.

ChatGPT can’t be credited as an author, says world’s largest academic publisherBut using AI to help write a paper is fine, with proper disclosure. Well crap. There goes my career as a novelist. A controversy we never imagined would be a thing but clearly, it is. You can understand why publishers will want to take a hard stance saying no but some of the writing Chat GPT is able to produce can easily fool you for a real writer.

UC scrambling to afford big wage gains for academic workers: Grad student cuts loomJust weeks after the University of California and academic workers celebrated historic wage gains in new labor contracts, campuses are scrambling over how to pay for them, with potential cuts in new graduate students looming. They could probably dip into the billions they make if their professional sports teams to bridge the gap. Quit framing this like the “poor, giant school” *can’t* afford this when we all know that they have the money, they just don’t want to spend it on students.
