“I think I was subconsciously aware that there were little to no Asian actors whom I could really look up to here in the West.”

with Richa Shukla Moorjani as Kamala and Poorna Jagannathan as Nalini.“It kind of blew me away, and that’s still something that I find myself experiencing for the first time in many ways, and I’m building my comfort with that,” Liu says about the “overwhelming” fan response after the show premiered on Netflix last spring. “But it really speaks to how much the show and the character resonated with people, and Ilove and appreciate that so much.

“All those years of trying to play sports and training in some kind of martial arts, even though I wasn’t very good at it, has come into play because I can move and walk with the mentality of, ‘Oh, I’ve done this before,’ as opposed to a completely foreign physical skill that I’ve never even touched,” he says.

“I think I was subconsciously aware that there were little to no Asian actors whom I could really look up to here in the West. I felt like I was able to see that with superstars from the East,” he says. “But I guess I didn’t really feel all that represented when I was a kid. The fact that I had to watch Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li to get my sort of Asian representation fix just speaks to the lack of Asian-American men that I could watch on TV when I was a kid.

While he can’t reveal many details about the 13-episode first season, Liu says that Nicky and Henry’s search for the person who killed Nicky’s mentor will only deepen their initial connection, and their blossoming friendship“You just see these two people who are immediately attracted to each other for all these great reasons, and it’s going to be really fun,” he teases.
