White House press secretary Jen Psaki said it was “too early to tell whether the Russians are serious about the path to diplomacy or not,” or whether they will use the talks as a &#8220…

MOSCOW — The Kremlin said Tuesday the security talks with the U.S. amid tensions over Ukraine have given little reason for optimism, adding that Russia would wait for the outcome of other meetings this week before deciding whether it’s worthwhile to continue negotiations.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that while the talks were “open, comprehensive and direct,” he emphasized that it’s the result that matters. “We stand firm in pushing back on security proposals that are simply nonstarters,” Smith told reporters. Psaki sidestepped questions about whether the White House agreed with Peskov’s assertion that the Geneva’s talks did not provide reason for greater optimism. She noted, however, that the talks had included discussions about the placement of missiles in Europe and placing reciprocal limits on military exercises.

No concessions, no breakthroughs: Russia, U.S. cast pall on Ukraine talksMOSCOW/WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Russia said on Sunday it would not make concessions under U.S. pressure and warned that this week's talks on the Ukraine crisis might end early, while Washington said no breakthroughs were expected and progress depended on de-escalation from Moscow. The hard line from Moscow underscored the fragile prospects for negotiations that Washington hopes will avert the danger of a new Russian invasion of Ukraine, at the tensest point in U.S.-Russia relations since the Cold War ended three decades ago. Talks begin on Monday in Geneva before moving to Brussels and Vienna, but the state-owned RIA news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying it was entirely possible the diplomacy could end after a single meeting.
