The hard-driving consulting industry wants to soften its image. Here's how KPMG is trying out a more flexible, family-friendly culture to combat burnout and win talent.

demanding and hard-driving culture.On Monday, the accounting and consulting firm announced a slew of new and expanded employee benefits designed to simplify workers' lives and address some of the logistical, financial, and emotional challenges brought on by the pandemic.
The benefits are meant to signal that the company is trying to takea more empathic approachto the needs of its 35,000 US workers — while also staking out a position as an employer of choice in a tight job market, Knopp said."What we've all witnessed and experienced during this pandemic, coupled with the red-hot labor market, has intensified our focus on our people and our organizational culture," Knopp added. The new benefits are the result of what employee surveys, focus groups, and healthcare advisors recommended would ease work-life challenges, he said. headtopics.com
The new benefits include 12 weeks of paid parental leave for new mothers and fathers, a rarity in corporate America. KPMG also plans to implement a 10% decrease in employee healthcare premiums without changing the level off benefits; additional paid caregiver leave for employees to tend to family members and loves ones with serious health conditions; and a company-funded contribution to employees' retirement plans equal to about 6% to 8% of their pay, without any requirement for workers to contribute their own money.
KPMG said it would take mandatory company-wide breaks twice a year (in the summer and in December), in addition to expanding the employee holiday calendar by two to 16 paid days off per year. The company also plans to maintain its pandemic-era policy of"no camera Fridays" and no internal meetings on Wednesday afternoons.
