The measure, which was shown to The Wall Street Journal by a person with ties to the state’s Republican party, is being circulated two days after the Senate’s Republican leader took to the Senate floor to say that a mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 was “fed lies” and “were provoked by the president and other powerful people.” Mr. McConnell's words laid the blame squarely on Mr.
“Whereas Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell has a great influence on the US Congress, we believe Sen. McConnell should stand with President Trump against this unnecessary, superfluous and divisive action by the US House of Representatives,” the resolution reads. It goes on to say that the state party’s central committee “respectfully asks the Honorable Senior Senator from Kentucky Mitch McConnell to stand with President Trump” and to “publicly condemn” the second impeachment.
It was a notable rebuke given Mr. McConnell’s role in building up the state party and his influence over its members. The measure is being circulated under the name of Mac Brown, the state party chairman and an executive at the Brown-Forman Corporation, a whiskey maker that is a major donor to the state’s Republicans, including Mr. McConnell.Phone calls and emails to the state’s Republican party either weren’t returned or were referred to a spokesman who is out of the office.
A spokesman for Mr. McConnell said: “We don’t have anything to add to Leader McConnell’s floor remarks on the topic.”
