Bob Baffert’s horses have failed 30 drug tests over the past four decades.

Baffert insists Medina Spirit was never treated with bethamethasone and vowed to hold his own investigation. “I got the biggest gut-punch in racing for something that I didn’t do,” Baffert said. “And it’s disturbing. It’s an injustice to the horse.” If Medina Spirit is ultimately stripped of the Kentucky Derby title it would be historic. In the 147 years of the Kentucky Derby, only two other horses have been disqualified after finishing in first place.

Either way, this is a complete disaster for racing — but one that has felt inevitable for some time now given how ineffectively the sport is governed and the pervasive sense among bettors and fans that layers of bureaucracy and conflicts of interest have enabled cheaters to slither through the cracks.Slate is covering the stories that matter to you. That poor trainer. He puts all that hard work in and then his horses ruin it by doing a whole bunch of drugs. For shame.

Medina Spirit, winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby, fails drug testNEW: The horse that won the 2021 Kentucky Derby, Medina Spirit, has failed a drug test, the horse's Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert says. GOP leadership and the other guy still content the horse wins the race, see the pictures at the finish, and maybe the horse just ate some nasturtiums in the winner’s circle bouquet... yea that’s the line we’ll use. So... the 'horse' failed? Isn't this sort of Gaslighting? The 'horse' was not responsible. This is bad journalism, bad writing, and intellectually dishonest. The trainer cheated and got caught cheating. He should go to jail. I don't watch but after reading the surprisingly uninformative article, I have to ask, why are we just finding this out now? Why wouldn't they test before the race. Seems like maybe that's the best time for the tests.
