I think about how your first film [the 1981 documentary] was about a bridge. I wondered what your thoughts are now that these ruptures are so visible to us, now that 73 million people voted toward a divisiveness that has been so damaging to our country.
BURNS: Well, it’s interesting. I still get actual letters from people who have to find out where I live, write on a piece of paper, put it in an envelope with a stamp, and drop it in the mail. And I get hundreds of letters. They want to talk about a relative who played minor league baseball, or an older brother who was killed in Vietnam, or a great-great-grandfather who fought in the Civil War.
