Justin Stapley asks: Did Evan McMullin just break Utah’s SB54?

Independent candidate finds a way around law that was supposed to open up the primary process in Utah.

For those unfamiliar with SB54, it created a second path to becoming a party’s nominee beyond getting the nod from a party’s delegates at the state convention. The argument went that too few average Utahns were participating in our system of neighborhood caucuses, leading to a situation where delegates at convention failed to reflect the average voters of their party and thrust poor and unrepresentative candidates upon the electorate.

With this in mind, let’s consider what just happened with Evan McMullin in the Democratic convention. Evan McMullin is not a Democrat. He didn’t collect signatures to get into a primary run-off. Delegates did not vote on his candidacy for the Democratic Party. Instead, by a 57% to 43% margin, the Without collecting a single signature and without even gaining 60% support of Democratic delegates, Evan McMullin has removed an official Democratic contender from his Senate race without ever facing affirmation from Democratic primary voters. He has essentially become the Democrat’s nominee without having to go through the typical process to do so, and, arguably, has hurtled a lower bar to do so.

Utah Democrats back independent as US Senate candidateUtah Democrats pulling hard to defeat Republican Sen. Mike Lee took the unusual step Saturday of spurning a party hopeful to instead get behind an independent, former presidential candidate Evan McMullin McMullin and other Democrats do not stand a chance in Utah. And the Democrats wonder why they're in a death spiral. They say Vote Blue No Matter Who. Then put forward Red candidates. Next up Liz Cheney. Well, when the GOP goes low, the Democrats write a very stern letter telling them they've been naughty. Seriously...do they really think they can win by doing nothing or giving up? Look up 'Weimer Republic'...that is where the Dem. est. is right now. We are so f**ked.

Utah Dems Snub Their Own in Quest to Unseat Sen. Mike LeeParty delegates voted to back Evan McMullin, a former Republican turned independent, over a Democratic hopeful. Supporting a republican to beat a republican just means you lose either way. WHO are his donors? that tells the real story. He's not caucusing with Dems so I don't understand this endorsement.

Utah Democratic Party votes to not nominate own Senate candidate, but back McMullinFor the first time ever, the Utah Democrats chose not to nominate a candidate for U.S. Senate from their own party. Instead, they chose to join independent candidate Evan McMullin's coalition to challenge incumbent Sen. Mike Lee. Democrats have nothing to run on. Haha, independent The replies to this are just so dumb. Obviously those chose a republic leaning candidate that was not as bad as Mike lee in hopes that some of the idiots who only vote red here will elect him over a literal traitior to our country. 🙄

How bad do Utah Democrats want Mike Lee out? Bad enough to back Evan McMullinDuring their state convention, Utah Democrats decided to not put forth a Democratic candidate to face off with Sen. Mike Lee, which has big implications for Utah's U.S. Senate race. All but guaranteeing a massive Mike Lee landslide victory. 😂😂 This was an extremely difficult choice for Utah state delegates (me included). But ultimately it's about removing the human skidmark that is Mike Lee off of Utah's underpants. McMullen in a two man race has the best chance of doing that.
