Opening statements loom this week for a white former Minnesota police officer who said she drew her handgun by mistake when she fatally shot Black motorist Daunte Wright.

Kim Potter, 49, is charged with first-degree and second-degree manslaughter in Wright’s April 11 death in Brooklyn Center, a Minneapolis suburb. Opening statements are scheduled for Wednesday.

“The broader that the instructions make the burden on the state, the more areas you have to punch holes in it,” Brandt said, adding that sometimes the process can be “very contentious."Potter has said she meant to use her Taser on Wright after he tried to drive away from officers while they were trying to arrest him, but that she grabbed her handgun instead. Her body camera recorded the shooting.

The makeup of the jury is roughly in line with the demographics of Hennepin County, which is about 74% white, but notably less diverse than the jury that convicted former Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin this spring in the death of George Floyd. Potter, who resigned two days after Wright's death, has told the court she will testify. Body-camera video recorded the shooting, with Potter heard saying, “Taser, Taser, Taser” before she fired, followed by, “I grabbed the wrong gun.”

Black white

Guns waay heavier then the taser 🤔 it's like almost 2 lbs w/ full clip versus a taser that doesn't even weigh 10oz.

It is Minnesota she will be free soon

...may be they are saying is it because he is/was black

...sucjh black and white cases were actually accidents. what do u think is the impact of ABC itself as a media that speaks for racial equality and report cases from that position because they have the right...

it is not statements that ppl who want to understand the case and make a decision want to hear that ppl in this kind of circumstances make. or a kind that legally that help ppl know the truth. is it the prosecution the pressure forcing inducing ppl to give up. how many such...

Let her go.... This was a genuine mistake.... She knew it was a mistake when it happened.... Human error is in the cards and if she had a choice this wasn't the card she wanted.....

What does skin color have to do with it? The officer shot the driver. It's all.

She drew the exact weapon she intended, Subconsciously or consciously? Still murder.

Guy was a dirtbag with a gun charge felony warrant

I think she had to be hung over or on something...I know they're a bit similar, but, I know all my guns intimately...I could grab one blindfolded and tell you which one it was...no way a sober person mistakes a gun for a tazer unless they're compromised in some way. Drug Test.

I think she’ll be ok as long as the prosecution doesn’t bring up the “black privilege” that really caused this whole incident…

Sad. But guilty.
