An absolute legend. (In Ohio.)

is an image of a middle-aged man in a wizard’s costume holding the notoriously stinky durian fruit high in the air as if an offering. Above the image, highlighted in yellow, it says, “FREE ADMISSION!” Free admission to a grocery store seems a given, but Jungle Jim’s is a “World of Food,” a “Foodie Wonderland,” an “International Food Lovers’ Paradise.

“That’s my department. My passion is junk. That’s my passion. I get all kinds of junk and I make things out of everybody’s leftovers and I can show you and you will flip out because most of the stuff you see here is from other stores that can’t use it. And we take it and we alter it. We have a whole shop that I run next door, it’s a whole warehouse, and it’s filled with stuff. And we have a welding department, carpenters, painters, we have everything, and we design and we build this stuff.

My tour begins, naturally, at the entrance, beside, unnaturally, an animatronic ear of corn and stick of butter, engaged in a rather elaborate scene with the corn portraying a ventriloquist, and the butter, its dummy. As far as the eye can see, no surface in the store is left untouched. The telephone poles enabling customers to reach a customer service agent are disguised as giraffes.

Bonaminio was born into a blue-collar family outside of Cleveland; his father was a steelworker, and his mother a part-time salesperson. As the legend goes, he always had a thirst for entrepreneurship. In his early teens, he earned money gathering used golf balls, cleaning them, and reselling them. In high school, he would hitchhike five miles carrying his own bulky equipment to wash cars.
