Judge orders extradition of Honduras' former police chief

Juan Carlos Bonilla Valladares served as the Central American country’s top police official in 2012 and 2013. Better known as “El Tigre, ” or “The Tiger,” Bonilla faced allegations of human rights abuses during his time in command.The United States had requested Bonilla’s arrest and extradition in May of last year on drug and weapons charges. Prosecutors labeled him a co-conspirator of former President Juan Orlando Hernández and the president’s brother Tony Hernández.

U.S. prosecutors in Manhattan announced charges against Bonilla in April 2020, alleging that he used his law enforcement clout to protect U.S.-bound shipments of cocaine. Bonilla denied at the time being a drug trafficker.

These types of neo-colonialism activities must end. He must be tried and sentence in his own country if indeed a crime is committed. It is very demeaning. The former colonizers will not allow their citizens to be treated like that and to hell with the ICC. Enough!

Honduras is impacted mostly by organized crime, high-risk communities, and a weak governance unable to challenge inadequate responses to human rights violations and widespread violence caused by armed structures such as gangs and drug trafficking
