If you’re considering buying an HOA-governed home, please remember one thing, writes Kris_Frieswick: You’re better off on your own

I own a property governed by an HOA, the board members of which I consider friends. Still, I will never again own a property governed by an HOA. I would rather just live in a van down by the river, where at least no one tells me what color I can paint my van, what type of tires I need to have, or what size holiday décor I am allowed to hang from the rearview mirror.

If you are considering buying a home governed by an HOA board, here is a breakdown of each type, as well as where they dwell in the various circles of hell.Co-op boards exist on the same level of Hades as Beelzebub, Ted Bundy, whoever designed Gmail, and bad paper cuts.

The only way to deal with an HOA board is to become a member. This will give you the illusion of agency and control over your largest asset, thus eliminating some of the stress of owning an HOA-governed home. It will also bring a raft of problems for you, your family and possibly your pets, all of whom may end up bearing the brunt of your board-related decisions. You may eventually need to move.HOA boards put the devil in the homeownership details.

Kris_Frieswick Who writes this... Nobody wants an hoa but everywhere in suburbia has hoas. Good luck with that one.

Kris_Frieswick Our HOA is pretty hands off. It does protect us from those who don't keep their property up (keeping lawn mowed, non-running vehicles, etc).

Kris_Frieswick I live near a college campus. Our HOA has kept us from dormitories and parking nightmares. There are downsides but the upside is living in a well ordered environment.

Kris_Frieswick Meh

Kris_Frieswick I honestly don't understand HOAs. I always thought, you buy a home, it's yours to do with as you please. Plant the trees or bushes or flowers you like. Paint the shudders whatever color you want. Put up whatever fence you want & make an addition with a permit.
