The very expensive ride lasted all of 11 minutes

“Billionaires go to space” tends to conjure up images of beach vacations on Mars. As a result, many were surprised to find that Jeff Bezos’s vaunted trip to space this morning aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard launch vehicle lasted all of 11 minutes from launch to landing. The vessel traveled a bit over 63 miles into the air . The entire event felt less like “space tourism” as sci-fi movies would have us imagine it, and more like the world’s most expensive thrill ride.

The entire Blue Origins endeavor largely failed to inspire in the way that NASA’s publicly funded launches could. While it was easy to dream that all of human achievement would be aboard each and every Challenger and Apollo shuttle, the spectacle of the Blue Origins launch stirred up no such emotions. The endgame of the “billionaires in space” missions of Bezos’s company is to develop commercially viable companies that offer some new rarified thrill to the monied.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Targets Bigger Space GoalsJeff Bezos' launch Tuesday is a small step as it tries to make a giant leap in winning government contracts and competing with Elon Musk’s SpaceX Makes sense. Space being either a duopoly or oligopoly would make it consistent with where other markets in American capitalism have been going. ¡Ve a Dios y luego quédate allí! For the good of humanity we can only hope the spaceship explodes on live stream.

When Is Jeff Bezos’ Flight to Space and How to Watch the Blue Origin LaunchThe Amazon founder plans to make his first visit to space with a flight scheduled to launch at 9 a.m EDT on July 20. Here’s what to know about the flight and how to watch the launch. Who actually cares think the world right now has more important things to worry about - shame he doesn’t take the money and spend it on healthcare or education for all. Before we boldly go where no one has gone before let’s fix earth first horrible Who gives an actual shit about few billionaires going barely into space? Maybe Bezos should spend some of his billions actually paying his workers a living wage and give them working conditions that don’t require them to urinate in bottles.
