A Japanese bulk carrier that struck a coral reef off Mauritius and has leaked at least an estimated 1,000 tonnes of oil passed an annual inspection in March without any problems, Japan's ClassNK inspection body said on Tuesday.

The ship, MV Wakashio, owned by Nagashiki Shipping and operated by Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd, ran onto the reef on July 25, and the resulting oil leak has raised fears of a major ecological crisis the Indian Ocean island. “We will do our utmost towards resolving the situation quickly,” Mitsui OSK said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that it doubted whether the incident would have a large enough impact on its earnings to warrant issuing a disclosure notice to investors.

PORTABLEAIRSYD Looks like hitting the coral reef for the coal...

Japan should pay compensations to the Mauritian country

So what? It hit a reef! The Titanic was sea-worthy as well. Just because it passed rego, doesn't mean it is unsinkable, the sea does not really care that much about paperwork.

Where’s the “wink wink, nod nod”?

They don't know the contour & depth of their voyage on sea? How can this happen?

Ship’s fine. Captain isn’t.

This ship should not have been there - it was headed for Brazil. Navigation error? The world does not need another disaster like this. Hope the remaining oil is contained and the cleanup can be done quickly. 🙏🏻

Treasured marine life in the Indian Ocean will be destroyed. 🤬

Did they sign it off as being coral reef strike resistant? If not, then probably irrelevant.

Well that's a relief. How long before they get those pillows attached and plug the leak? Seems more pressing than March paperwork.

But did the captain and crew pass capability tests? They were either too pissed on Saki and were on auto pilot or were totally incompetent to read maps and check all the instruments they have.

WTH!

At Mauritius, dont they have oil spill disaster management office?

Maybe hitting a coral reef was the thing.

INRI CRISTO O ÚLTIMO , ACEITA JESUS ,DEUS TE AMA ! CHEGOU A HORA , OBEDEÇA MEU PAI *DEUS* OU ELE OU NADA..

OMG what a horrible sight and brazenly damaging to an ecosystem

Valdez skipper passed DUI test

dayum that shit l o w

Clearly a bung was involved

Apparently it needed 1 more check!

😱😱

.Japan & the shipping company need to cost damages occurring in the Mauritius. Fisherman will not be able to fish anymore. Tourists will keep away. Cleaning this oil is a daunting task & it will take ages to have it clean. It will never be as clean as before. MauritiusOilSpill

I’m guessing the annual checks didn’t involve crashing into a reef? 🤬

Passed the paper test only not in the bath I guess

They should release the reports, unless they have something to hide.
