'In just over a month and a half, we almost brought (the infection) situation under control,' Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said.

While Japan never implemented stringent lockdowns like those in parts of China, many European countries and the U.S., it barred foreigner travelers who had visited many hard-hit countries and urged residents to adhere to social distancing guidelines. Restaurants and shops were also required to close earlier than normal. Karaoke bars, live music venues and gyms were shuttered and will remain closed in the coming weeks.

Public health officials in Japan have warned the population to wear masks in public and continue to work from home if possible. The Japanese government has asked the population to adapt to a new lifestyle to avoid an uptick in new cases and prevent the spread of the virus. People have also been encouraged to avoid traveling for non-essential purposes to other regions of the country.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe speaks as a sign language interpreter wearing a face shield interprets at a news conference in Tokyo on May 25.It's unclear why Japan has a relatively low infection rate and a comparatively small number of deaths due to COVID-19. Abe has faced criticism for taking little action to curb the virus' spread as many other nations implemented stringent lockdowns.

"Just by looking at death numbers, you can say Japan was successful," Mikihito Tanaka, a professor at Waseda University specializing in science communication, and a member of a public group of experts on the novel virus, told Bloomberg."But even experts don't know the reason." Yasutoshi Nishimura, Japan's economic revitalization minister, has said that the situation with the virus will be reviewed every three weeks and further steps could be taken to ease the guidance currently in place, Kyodo News reported. Until then, the Japanese public has been encouraged to remain at home and to avoid large public gatherings.

I see ppl sharing this now. And it’s BS. 1. 286 new cases just in Tokyo yesterday. Maybe not US-type numbers but way too high for our comfort. 2. We had 2 shutdowns: one for 2 weeks, then one for 2 months. Shutdown, lockdown; fact is I couldn’t work or workout for 2-1/2 months.

'No lockdown' is extremely misleading. There was no official lockdown but people voluntarily stayed home here.

The difference isn’t herd immunity & the take away isn’t that we should open as well. It’s consistent messaging of the risks, a culture of putting community needs over the individual that encourages self quarantine if exposed, and access to universal healthcare if sick.

Japan, Sweden, Germany = first world France, UK, Spain, Italy, USA .. = third world

What headline didn't include: 'Karaoke bars, live music venues & gyms were shuttered & will remain closed in the coming weeks. . . health officials have warned the population to wear masks in public & continue to work from home if possible. . . .etc

Laurie_Garrett Perhaps one factor is MASKS IN ALL PUBLIC SPACES!

Japan is not rallying around its prime ministerEven though the country has come through the pandemic in relatively good shape Feels somewhat familiar 🤔 Strange....and prime minister abe is still firmly supported by Japanese locals. Something wrong with this poll again as nhk is known to provide bias news by favoring communist propaganda? Can you imagine what the Japanese would do if THEY had to deal with Trump in charge?
