The northern town that recorded Italy's first coronavirus infection offers a virtuous example: Stay home, and trends can reverse. Infections have not stopped in Codogno, but they have slowed.

In this photo taken on Thursday, March 12, 2020, a man wearing a mask walks in Codogno, Italy. The northern Italian town that recorded Italy’s first coronavirus infection has offered a virtuous example to fellow Italians, now facing an unprecedented nationwide lockdown, that by staying home, trends can reverse. Infections of the new virus have not stopped in Codogno, which still has registered the most of any of the 10 Lombardy towns Italy’s original red zone, but they have slowed.

In the town of 16,000 located near the Po River about 60 kilometers southwest of Milan, most everyone knows someone among the nearly 200 infected with the virus, or the 34 who have died. “It is a war. It is a war, but we have every possibility of winning,” Passerini said. “Unlike with our grandfathers, who went physically into battle for our freedom, we are being required to show responsibility — responsibility and calm.”

Even with the masks, residents steadfastly abide by the 1-meter distance rule, as they wait outside a bank to pay bills, a pharmacy to have their prescriptions filled, or a bakery for a few provisions. So while people can no longer attend Mass or swap news at a café, a local parish radio station has stepped in to partially fill that gap, transmitting Mass and prayer, along with bulletins from the civil protection agency and messages from the mayor. Trains no longer stop at the station -- no one is going anywhere anyway. And shops for non-essentials like apparel and bicycles that opened long enough to post signs instructing customers that they must wear a mask to enter, are shuttered anew.

I think the virus stays airborne for 3 days and 9 days on surfaces.

The measures won't completely stop the spread. The point is that by lowering the speed of transmission, the healthcare workers can deal with the influx of patients and save more lives. flattenthecurve

Americans will not stay home: they go to the emergency room. If healthcare is made free, this becomes much worse. I know because I work in an emergency room.

KattyKay_ Until everyone comes out again, which they must eventually do.

Doesn't the virus have a 3 day life on surfaces and people infected are only contagious for a couple days? Couple days of quarantine should really help slow down the spread.

Ryerson, you see this

Oh yes, if they could bring down numbers and stop the dangerous virus from spreading, it would save lives. Stay home seems like the best thing to do.

Stay home? *Indonesian left the chat

The lesson here: NEVER go ANYWHERE, for ANYTHING, EVER and you’ll never get sick. Thanks AP!

Most of them are already infected, fled the town or are dead.

well, eventually you run out of people to get infected, so yeah, numbers will slow down
