Morehouse College seniors got a surprise Sunday when billionaire investor Robert F. Smith announced during his commencement speech that he would pay off the student loan debt for the historically black college's graduating class.
"My family is going to create a grant to eliminate your student loans," he told the newly minted graduates in Atlanta. The sum among the more than 300 students adds up to about $40 million, Morehouse spokeswoman Aileen Dodd told CNN. Smith on Sunday also received an honorary degree, along with actor Angela Bassett and psychologist Edmund Gordon. The entrepreneur, founder of the investment firm Vista Equity Partners, is worth about $5 billion, according to Forbes.

Keep in mind many students at Morehouse (and other schools) drop out. They are even less well equipped to repay their student loans without a degree. ~23% of students dropped out from the 2013 class and that's better than the national average.

'Disadvantaged' is not a word I would use to describe college graduates, with or without debt. A generous act but I witness appallingly disadvantaged lives each day and only wish they too could be given a helping hand to break what is likely to be a lifetime of debt.

Amazing for them, but sad that it's something he would ever need to do. There shouldn't be any loans, because there shouldn't be any cost. College should be free to the student, paid for by the government as an investment we all make for a more educated and productive society.
