While RuPaul may reign supreme as the drag superstar of the world, it’s become increasingly clear that you don’t have to be the queen bee to make a nice little honeypot of your own.

Drag RaceIn recent years, however, they’ve begun to “rethink” that strategy. “We don’t really sign anyone who’s brand new on the show anymore,” he says.

Bob agrees. “I’m not interested in keeping queer people secret,” she says. “I’m not interested in limiting the success of drag performers, trans people, queer people. I’m glad that everyone knows thathad been successfully gate kept, and we had never heard about them by the time we came around. I’m also not a hipster. I’m not one of those folks who’s like, ‘I knew about you before you were cool, so now you can’t be cool anymore.

“It’s crazy now to have that reversed. Now they’re coming to us,” Charpetier says. “You remember those people.”standards, is being a multihyphenate. “Drag queens are so used to doing literally everything,” Monét says. “You are the writer, the director, the producer, the host, the dancer, the singer.”

The growth of the drag queen industry has had the sort of trickle-down effect Reagan Republicans can only dream of. “These queens have created so many jobs for people,” Charpentier says. “Assistants and tour managers and wig makers and stylists and wardrobe makers. There’s this whole economy now of people now who have jobs and make a living because of drag, which did not exist before.”

And so the queens continue their pursuit of world domination, with the help of PEG rather than mother Ru. Monét’s taping a comedy special on June 17; Bob has a book calledon an extensive tour this fall.
