Tony Stark's final Iron Man suit showcased the perfect new power, just in time to guarantee the Armored Avenger's legacy would live on beyond its inventor. The suit appears in Iron Man: The End, a story chronicling the final days of Tony Stark in a potential future timeline of the Marvel Universe.
In "the middle decades of the 21st century," Tony Stark is at the end of a long career as the head technologist of Stark Universal. Finalizing the plans for Earth's first space elevator, the hero is diagnosed with progressive nerve damage which will soon render him unable to operate his fabled suit, which at this point is formed of liquid metal and can quickly shift between modes, from supersonic travel to Hulkbuster strength.
Thankfully, it emerges that Travis was merely retrieving the nano-particle suit, battling the Ultra-Dynamo with its full capabilities, which include restraint foam, a duron beam, and solar-powered air cannons that make repulsor rays seem gentle. Nevertheless, Ultra-Dynamo has the upper hand until Travis reveals a surprise adaptation to the suit - the ability to use its nano particles to absorb matter from other sources, intended as a way to repair battle damage.
It's the ideal power to wield against Iron Man's tech-focused villains, meaning that no matter what armor they throw at him, he's able to disassemble it and become stronger. Travis' bravery and design instincts reassure Tony that it's safe to pass on his legacy, and he resolves to use Big Jump to live out the rest of his life in space, where the conditions will lessen the spread of his nerve damage.
Ultimately, it's fitting that Tony could only surrender the Iron Man identity to a fellow reckless genius, and the nano-particle suit becomes the last armor of the first Iron Man, and the first suit of his inheritor. Tony's final cue to allow someone else to become Iron Man is witnessing both their bravery in facing down a villain like the Ultra-Dynamo and their skill in taking a suit he designed and finding a way to give it the one power that can succeed in his original mission. .
