Ireland declares that Subway’s bread is basically cake

The mystery of Subway’s bread smell may finally be solved: it’s the sugar. The Irish Supreme Court recently ruled that Subway’s bread has too much sugar in it for it to be considered bread under the country’s Value Added Tax regulations, and thus is subject to the tax.

that for bread to be considered a staple food, and thus not subject to VAT, its sugar content “shall not exceed 2 percent of the weight of flour included in the dough.” However, Subway’s bread comes in at a whopping 10 percent, bread only in spirit. Looking forward to our lunchtime turkey and cheese on a Danish, as well as the brewing U.S. vs. Ireland culture war.
