Iowa Gov. Reynolds signs order restoring felon voting rights, allowing 40,000 former inmates to register and head to the polls.

“We absolutely encourage people to take this day and register,” she said. “Now our work is to make sure that people are registered and understand as of today they don’t need to do paperwork, they don’t need to do anything like that. As of today they are allowed to vote.”

“Iowa no longer is the only state in the country to permanently and for life ban its citizens from voting following any felony conviction,” Stringer said in a news release. “We’re relieved that the governor’s order does not make eligibility to vote dependent on how much money a person has, that is, it’s not contingent on paying off fees and fines or other associated debts.”

“It boils down to our fundamental belief in redemption and second chances,” Reynolds said before signing the order. “It’s a big step for so many on the road to redemption and proving to themselves and maybe to others that their crimes or convictions do not define them.” After recent changes in Kentucky, Virginia and Florida, Iowa was left as the only state with broad constitutional language that revoked felons’ voting rights. In Maine and Vermont, felons can even vote while they’re in prison. Sixteen states restore the vote upon release, and another 21 automatically restore it after the sentence is served, including parole and probation. Other states attach conditions for certain crimes.

Felon should never get right to vote back. Their as social contract made with poeple of this country, that is broking when you do a felon crime shouldn't be able to fix that social contract so easily.

Did she restore their right to purchase guns as well

Wow, she's got executive powers AND legislative powers! Add judicial powers and she'll be a full blown dictator!

Now restore gun rights? Why not?

Not wearing a mask. CovidKim

Florida is literally suing to bypass an amendment we voted in to give felons their vote back!

Hoosier47906 I can’t wait for The Tweet.

I see the governor has her token Blacks in the background. Well the prison system is full of people from all races, especially whites. If you've committed crimes to go to prison, more than likely you'll vote Republican. The criminals and Republicans have a lot in common.

👏👏👏

OMG ITS CLAIRE UNDERWOOD

There is absolutely no reason why someone who has paid their time shouldn't be allowed to vote. At that point it becomes voter suppression, period.

EveryoneShouldVote

I wonder who will get the felon vote?

Not even hiding it now. Desperate for votes.

Awesome!

Criminals love the Democrat Party.

Oh Joni ☝️😜👍 She's not gonna like that. Them folks don't like her.

are they going to let them all out to vote

seemva1 Meh😐she’s finally done an easy thing she & previous governors could have done year’s ago❎Her numbers r tanking in IA bc of poor handling of COVID19. This isn’t leadership on her part🔑it’s a calculated political move 2win her votes of BIPOC who make-up high% of incarcerated😎💙

most felons can vote after the do their prisons or probation. At this rate go ahead and let them have their gun rights back. If we can vote we can shoot!

Turns out not all GOP governors are crazy evil Hope others learn from this and stop being heartless and evil

Yamiche But she failed to invite BLM Des Moines, who made it happen.

This is Iowa.. they all must be all white.. would like to know demographics of these fellons

Yamiche A good start on allowing folks to redeem themselves. Striking how evangelicals talk about redemption for themselves & their white friends but won't apply that same standard to minorities trapped in the racist incarceration pipeline. Restoring voting rights is long overdue.

Yamiche This is a smart political move on her part and they do deserve to have the right to vote. That never should have been taken.

Iowa Governor no mask, no social distancing! IAGovernor

You people really underestimate how many Republicans are felons. Good luck with that.🤣

WTF Gov. Thumbs up!

VOTE BLUE

One of the only governors that’s been handling everything with the virus the right way.

Florida should take lesson from Iowa.

Whoa!
