The building at 8777 Collins Avenue, just north of Miami beach, was built in 1981. Surfside Commissioner Eliana Salzhauer said the building was undergoing inspection for its recertification. At least one person is dead and 10 injured, officials said, with nearly 100 people unaccounted for as of Thursday afternoon.

That is terrifying and sad beyond belief. Initial reports gave the impression that only a small section had collapsed but this is damn near the entire building.

Did a sinkhole open up underneath it? I didn’t think the collapsed part was so large. There doesn’t seem to be enough debris for the size but I’m no expert. Prayers for loved ones of those lost.

The building could be uninhabitable to prevent further structural damage the building.
