Intel looks to shed legacy businesses as it carries out its makeover plan to invest in high-margin, high-growth markets

The Wall Street Journal. The sale would include the transfer of Intel's solid-state drive business, NAND architectures, and production facilities in China. However, Intel arranged the deal such that it would still be able to use the China production facility until 2025, at which point ownership would turn over to SK Hynix. The companies hope to gain regulatory approval for the sale by late 2021. SK Hynix will gain the scale needed to compete against Samsung in the memory business.

6% share, according to TrendFocus data by Tom's Hardware. Intel and SK Hynix were the third- and fourth-highest producers of global NAND flash capacity in Q2 2020, and if the merger were to happen immediately, they would leapfrog Western Digital Corporation. Operational scale is incredibly important in the NAND flash business, since fixed costs are high and margins low.
