Inside Vera Wang’s New York Modernist Masterpiece

Wang’s conversation is speckled with famous comrades and mentors, both living and dead. “I would call this apartment contemporary—not brutalist like Rick Owens’s house. . . . You know when you are a designer—and I think Pierpaolo would agree—when you are very focused on your work, it’s very difficult to also focus on art and architecture. . . . I mean, Karl didn’t have much furniture either. To be honest, in a way I am quite close to Rick and Calvin. I’ve seen all of Calvin’s houses.

Wang with Josephine and Priya Shukla, Wang’s SVP of global communications, in the hair and makeup room.ACTUALLY, Wang says, the space functions perfectly for the way we live now. “Nobody does formal dining rooms anymore—I don’t want to live like that,” she says. “I’ve lived like that.” Instead, she says, people can bring their kids and congregate in the kitchen and eat sushi.

Back downstairs, past the spectacular Christopher Wool graffiti painting that can hold its own against any TV screen, Wang admits that yes, okay, this is probably the only apartment in the building that looks anything like this. Still, though the traces of the apartment’s past life are invisible to all but Wang herself, this doesn’t make them any less powerful. “There is a poignancy when I wander through here. It’s the same area that my mom walked through,” she says quietly.
