Iconic Cobra Swaps V8 For 617hp Electric Motor:
After six decades comes a significant reinterpretation of Britain’s iconic AC Cobra, only this time it gets a 617hp EV powertrain.
The AC Cobra electric is crafted in the spirit of the original 1962 Cobra, but adapted and repurposed for an electric motor. The ladder frame has been adapted to house the new motor components and the triangulated chassis is constructed to a high-grade composite. AC Cars claims the new lithium-ion battery, motors, inverters and power control units associated with the new electric powertrain weigh no more than the conventional V8 engine and transmission. The brakes and steering have also been retuned to suit the requirements of an electric car with its lower center of gravity.
With an unmistakable silhouette and a reputation for extreme performance, the AC Cobra’s story is the stuff of legend. Working with the sleek AC Ace, the AC Cobra changed sports cars forever in 1962 by fitting Ford’s small block V8 into the two-seater and creating an automotive masterpiece.
The shift from gasoline engines to electric motors almost 60 years on will be just as significant as the original model, allowing the famous British name to sell highly desirable high-performance cars that adapt to the needs of future buyers. The car is powered by a choice of two powerplants: a 308 hp version with 369 lb-ft of torque and the flagship model powered by a 617 hp unit with 738 lb-ft of torque. The 0-62 mph sprint times are 4.9 and 3.8 seconds respectively. headtopics.com
For those still yearning for the noise, vibration and feel of a V8, AC Cars still offer gasoline power—an upgraded version of the Cobra Superblower with a gutsier supercharged 6.2-liter V8 generating 650hp and 649 lb-ft of torque and a screaming soundtrack. So which are you? The howling or the silent type?

Based in Tokyo since 1988, I was in the front row to cover stories on Japan's Golden Year of 1989 when local carmakers launched legends such as the Mazda MX-5, Nissan Skyline GT-R, Subaru Legacy, Toyota MR2, Nissan 300ZX, Mazda RX-7, and then opened the first Lexus and Infiniti showrooms in the U.S. I have hosted a globally broadcast TV show on car culture called 'Samurai Wheels' in Japan, won a Japanese language speech contest, co-driven a Lexus V8 in the Nurburgring 24-hour race with Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi, finished 4th in a team I created with ex-F1 driver Ukyo Katayama to co-pilot an MX-5 race car in Mazda's annual 4-hour endurance race, drove a first-generation Porsche 911 up The Hill at Goodwood, piloted the lead car for Jeremy Clarkson in his"GT-R vs Bullet Train" race across Japan for Top Gear, co-starred in a Japanese WWII period TV drama playing a Russian baseball pitcher, published a book in Japanese about car culture and sung in a male choir at the Vatican (but not in front of the Pope). I have also scribbled about all things Japanese for publications including Car and Driver, Edmunds, Top Gear, Autocar, Auto Express, Quattroruote, The Sydney Morning Herald, Herald Sun, The Japan Times, GQ Japan, Japan Airlines inflight magazine and Forbes Japan. I am co-chairman of the World Car Awards and a juror for the Japan Car of the Year and International Engine of the Year.Read more: Forbes »
