Belgian photographer Bart Heynen traveled across the United States to document the daily lives of gay men and their children for his book "Dads."Bart HeynenThe question was simple: “Would you guys like to be dads?”
Things started to change, however, when they hosted Thompson’s 9-year-old nephew for a week and realized the shared experience of caring for a child was a beautiful thing, Hibma said. Over the course of that summer and into autumn, they pursued the adoption process and became the parents of a baby girl, Genhi.
“I’ve always wanted to be a dad,” Gibby said. “The idea of having kids with another man was not even an option to me. Awareness is not always there when you just don’t have other role models that are gay parents.”Gibby’s story is told across five photographs in the book. The first shows Gibby at 8 years old in a family photo. The second is a portrait where he seemingly blends into the vast Utah landscape.
The book encompasses a wide range of stories with a common thread: men who love and care for their children. What sets some of these families apart are the ways in which they came to be, and Heynen does include some of the women who were necessary in helping these families get started. “That’s when it started to feel possible,” Eledge said, “when all of these people that love us teamed up.”
NBCOUT I have an idea! Why not let gay couples adopt all of the unwanted babies that the religious right will create when Roe v Wade is overturned. It’s a win-win!
NBCOUT Beautiful 😍 So many negative things happening in the world right now yet folks want to portray this love & wonderful family as sinful. Let's move past that people. Gay parents can be just as good as a mom/dad couple & raise wonderful, compassionate, smart & healthy children.
NBCOUT Sick Propaganda!
NBCOUT There is no such thing as two fathers it's biologically impossible, you would think the party that 'follows science' would know this
NBCOUT Poor baby!
NBCOUT 🤢
