Self-awareness—staying in tune with ourselves—is easy to lose when we get caught up in a demanding, stressful career, but it's essential to maintain it if we want to excel. Here's how.

Our limiting made-up stories eclipse our natural wisdom and compassion, colonize our hearts and decide our fate if we forfeit our power to them. Many have, and many will. But self-awareness helps us tune into who we really are, what we really think, really feel and the direction we really want our careers to take. The solution is brief self-awareness exercises as you move through the workday.

Let’s say, for example, you’re faced with a challenging work situation, and the stressful voice in your head says you will fail. Recalling past victories when you mastered similar situations—remembering them vividly in your mind—can shift your outlook from anxiety and worry to calm, confidence and courage—reminding you who you really are.

Sit with it in nonjudgmental awareness just as you might provide bedside company for a sick friend and get to know this part of you. Continue to be present with as much awareness as possible and discover as much about this part of you as you can.Repeat these steps, replacing different emotions for disappointment such as worry, anxiety, anger, happiness. You can also raise your self-awareness through these steps by replacing emotions and focusing on your thoughts, body sensations or actions you’ve taken in the past.

Regular practice using these 10 steps can cultivate a deeper awareness as you examine your emotions, thoughts, body sensations and actions from a bird’s-eye view with curiosity instead of judgment. The more clearly you recognize thoughts and emotions in your body, the more clearly you know when a feeling is arising within you. Let’s say you get upset because a co-worker constantly talks over you in a meeting. Self-awareness prevents you from adding insult to injury.
