As the fall semester kicks off in person on many campuses, some professors are protesting, saying it's too dangerous.

California colleges can reopen this fall with limited in-person classes and greatly reduced dorm life, state public health officials said Friday as they issued long-awaited guidance for how campuses can operate amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.Campuses are taking on a patchwork of safety measures and shifting reopening plans this month as millions of students return to colleges and universities.

“The whole situation is unprecedented,” said Irene Mulvey, a math professor at Fairfield University in Connecticut and president of the American Assn. of University Professors, a teachers’ union with hundreds of college chapters. “Professors know best what’s happening on the ground and they are in many cases pushing to have a say.

Classes began Monday at the Chapel Hill campus. Dorms will be largely be occupied, but many students will live on campus without stepping in classrooms. Administrators expect just one-third of the usual 19,000 undergraduates to attend instruction in person. “What I’m hearing is a wide range of plans. Some are allowing faculty to decide: Do you want to teach hybrid, in person or remote? Others are saying no, you don’t get to decide, you were hired to teach in-person,” said Patricia Heintzelman, the association’s president and an instructor at Lamar University in Beaumont, a public school with an enrollment of more than 14,000 students that is set to open Tuesday.

“The system is pressuring us to have face-to-face classes,” said Finley, who noted that it’s hard for him and other junior faculty to refuse since they have less job security than those with tenure. At Whitworth University, a small, liberal arts institution in Spokane, Wash., English professor Fred Johnson said he’s comfortable with plans to teach in person and to offer some breakout sessions online.

Teacher unions are arguing that concerns about the health and safety of educators and staff are being left out of the debate. This is simply not true. Why is it other professions such as nurses and those on the front lines are made to go back to work but teachers are exempt?

OMG the dramatics. My daughter is a professor. She's not the least bit concerned. But wait, she's not a prof in CA. Perhaps your profs are failed actors.

“We can’t pay you if you don’t.” 🤷🏻‍♂️ Have a great summer!

Just cut their salaries simple.

We already know what's going to happen from the other school openings/closings. Why are we doing this stupid, dangerous shit?

Socialist teachers stay home

I remember healthcare workers saying the same thing, but they still went to work in direct contact with people dying from COVID. Teachers really are so brave...

That's funny. We wouldn't want any of those activist professors damning our great country to go the way of the dodo bird 🙄.

Relax dummies:

Then don’t come back; it’s as simple as that. No one is forcing this douche to do anything

Perhaps she can't teach when she's dead. But, she'll still be able to vote under the new LA County Mail-in Ballot rules ...

Teach? Look around, you helped create this.

It is dangerous right now if the numbers are high and they have not found a cure. But, education can continue at least online courses for now and then open the school when they find a cure. What do you think?

99% survival rate. How dumb are these teachers..

So quit lol find another school that will pay you to do nothing.

Then don’t collect a f$&% check with my tax paying money

Teachers: the least brave essential profession

DramaQueens

people are crazy to send their kids off to school.

'I can't teach when I'm dead' ... it's this sort of timeless wisdom that the kids are missing out on.

Sounds like there's a job opening. 🤔
