“The biggest challenge, the whole time, has been stepping into the unknown,” festival director Tricia Tuttle told Variety.A festival of the scale of LFF, that in pre-pandemic times screened some 250 features across the city, with offshoots around the U.This year's festival has also done away with the usual official jury, with four awards up for grabs— best fiction feature, best documentary feature, best short film and best XR — to be voted on by the online audience.K.Fresh from Venice, LFF regular Malgorzata Szumowska returns with her chronicle of the indiscreet charms of the Polish bourgeoisie, “Never Gonna Snow Again”; Josephine Decker’s Sundance winner “Shirley” features a standout performance from Elisabeth Moss; and Natalia Meta’s Berlin title, the giallo-influenced psycho-thriller “The Intruder,” is a highlight from Argentina., takes at least five months to put together."Although it’s been born out of crisis, this year’s edition of the LFF will be our most accessible yet," said BFI CEO Ben Roberts.“We really had to lock early before we knew what the autumn would look like.Sakura Higa | Japan 2020 |Journey (Series) | V AFRICAN APOCALYPSE | Rob Lemkin | UK 2020 | Debate | V AFTER LOVE | Aleem Khan | UK 2020 | Love | V + C AMMONITE | Francis Lee| UK 2020 | Closing Film | C ANOTHER ROUND | Thomas Vinterberg | Denmark 2020 | Journey | V + C BAD TALES | Fabio D’Innocenzo, Damiano D’Innocenzo | Italy 2020 | Dare | V BLOODY NOSE, EMPTY POCKET | Bill Ross IV, Turner Ross | USA 2020 | Journey | V THE CHEATERS | Paulette McDonagh | Australia 1929 | Treasures | V THE CHESS GAME OF THE WIND | Mohammad Reza Aslani | Iran 1976 | Treasures | V CICADA | Matt Fifer and Kieran Mulcare | USA 2020 | Love | V DAYS | Tsai Ming-Liang | Taiwan 2020 | Love | V* DAVID BYRNE’S AMERICAN UTOPIA | Spike Lee | USA 2020 | Create | V + C DELIA DERBYSHIRE: THE MYTHS AND LEGENDARY TAPES | Caroline Catz | UK 2020 | Create | V THE DISCIPLE | Chaitanya Tamhane | India 2020 | Create | V FAREWELL AMOR | Ekwa Msangi | USA 2020 | Love | V FRIENDSHIP’S DEATH | Peter Wollen | UK 1987 | Treasures | V GENUS PAN | Lav Diaz | Philippines 2020 | Journey | V GOLD FOR DOGS | Anna Cazenave Cambet | France 2020 | Journey | V HERSELF | Phyllida Lloyd | UK 2020 | Love | V + C HONEYMOOD | Talya Lavie | Israel 2020 | Laugh | V I AM SAMUEL | Pete Murimi | Kenya 2020 | Journey | V IDENTIFYING FEATURES | Fernanda Valadez | Mexico-Spain 2020 | Journey | V IF IT WERE LOVE | Patric Chiha | France 2020 | Love | V INDUSTRY | d.

We had to make some assumptions about what we would and wouldn’t be able to do, and that sort of pushed us to the hybrid model that we ended up with,” says Tuttle." Added festival director Tricia Tuttle:"This has been such a period of uncertainty and change across the industry and when we embarked on a radical new plan for our 2020 edition, we stepped into unknown territory. In this year’s hybrid version, 10 films will have physical cinema and virtual screenings, four titles, including the opening and closing films, will be at cinemas only, and the rest of the program virtual only.Another challenge the festival faced was convincing stakeholders to part with their films, but with the festival taking place in October, they’ve had several months of getting used to the new world, Tuttle said, and a renewed desire to reach out to audiences. The festival will screen 13 films in cinemas and 58 films online. One of its mantras is providing access to all and with U.while all the festival talks and the LFF Expanded XR program are available anywhere in the world.K.

cinemas currently operating at a socially distanced 30% capacity, the hybrid model will have a wider reach. While there are some cost advantages in the festival not bringing in international guests this year, the financial model has had to be recalibrated — as the vast majority of LFF’s 175,000 annual attendees can’t be present physically — with the attendant hit on box office.”.“To be honest, the bottom line isn’t very different, but it looks like a very different budget this year,” says Tuttle. The access is not limited to Londoners. While the films will be available only to geo-blocked U.

K.audiences, all the festival talks and the LFF Expanded extended reality program are available anywhere in the world.Outside the capital, the festival has physical venue partners in Manchester, Glasgow, Nottingham, Belfast, Sheffield, Cardiff and Bristol, that are part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network that the org works with year round.“It has changed the way by which we are going to be marketing and communicating the festival this year,” BFI chief executive.

Venice Hopes Its Film Festival Can Help Kick-Start a Coronavirus RecoveryThe Venice Film Festival is one of the few major cultural events in Europe taking place, despite fears that resurgent coronavirus infections could force its cancellation at any time. Everything I've seen from that film festival so far is that people don't have on masks and no social distancing. Doesn't look as if they fear coronavirus that much being stupid.
