Long before social media technology turned every voter into an opinion machine, our country depended upon the good faith of elected leaders to lead. Elected officials were not bombarded with factions and fictions that demanded subservience to any notion that went viral. More importantly, the two parties found common ground when it came to addressing the critical needs of the country – ignoring the occasional charlatan who attempted to bend one party or the other to his own will.
As we enter the final days of the mid-term elections, it is clear that we are still in the throes of a phenomenon that continues to be a clear and present danger to the Republic. The Republican Party has been overrun by zealots who have no interest in thoughtful, bipartisan governance. We have reached a point that the dominant faction of the once proud GOP is riddled by election deniers and candidates who are making it clear that they have no interest in the peaceful transition of power.
