.NASAEarth scientists are tracking the effects of the Jan. 15 volcanic eruption in Tonga and sharing satellite data with disaster response agencies:

Several Earth-observing satellites collected data during and after the potent blast spurred a tsunami and lofted volcanic material high into the stratosphere.

January 16, 2022Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations(CALIPSO) mission, shows material from the eruption rising to an altitude of 31 kilometers (19 miles). Other CALIPSO data collected on January 15 indicates that a small amount of ash and gas may have reached as high as 39.7 kilometers (24.7 miles).

“This is by far the highest volcanic plume we've ever measured with CALIPSO,” said Jason Tackett, a researcher at NASA’s Langley Research Center. CALIPSO was launched in 2006 by NASA and France’s National Centre for Space Studies (CNES).The eruption was powerful enough to inject volcanic material into the

Earth That's was one huge shock wave. Earth This clip is amazing, too bad this was a disaster 😅

Undersea cable fault could cut off Tonga from rest of the world for weeksThe South Pacific archipelago of Tonga could spend days, or even weeks, cut off from the rest of world because of difficulties in repairing its sole undersea communications cable, which an operator said was ruptured during a massive volcanic eruption.

Furious Tonga Volcano Explosion Set Off Waves in the Air—Then Rare TsunamisThe 4-foot water waves that reached California and Japan after Tonga’s volcanic eruptions were likely caused by powerful air-pressure waves, scientists said, possibly the first such occurrence since the 1883 Krakatau eruption. Here is a great satellite loop showing the shockwave as it traveled from the Volcano. But did it kick up enough dust to cool the planet? GlobalWarming Here’s a thread showing air pressure data from sensors around the world It’s fascinating to see data from backyard setups and home-brew sensors capture the data just as well as university labs.

Images and patchy communications reveal devastation in Tonga after tsunami unleashed by massive volcano eruption2 people have been confirmed dead in the Pacific island nation so far, but communications are still patchy, and the scale of the damage is just starting to become clear.

Earth Exception Earth Scary Earth Thank you, Hubble telescope Earth NASA, that is some beautiful footage. Thank you.susan Earth 😀 Earth Wow this is in tonga? Earth Wow! Earth 👽 Earth gvhgh Earth La potenza della natura

Leaked New Zealand military photos show scale of damage caused by Tonga volcano eruptionThe 40 images paint a much fuller picture of the damage to the country following a volcanic eruption and tsunami

Earth Wow! Earth Why don’t the ISS video or photos doesn’t show any of the other satellites that revolves around the earth? Earth Uh oh Earth Heu,les scientifiques savaient qu'un volcan sous marin allait craché à cet endroit, à cet instant ? ou bien, chaque km2 de la planète est il constamment scruté par les flottes de satellites...

Earth 🤯 Earth Can anybody explain to me what the red color is in this picture? Could this be massive chunks of the island being shot over 30,000 ft into the air while on fire? I’ve noticed the brown centering as well which led me to believe that this is in fact the case. Any insight is needed! Earth Horrible 😱

Earth Umm! It's looks like some one throw Hiroshima bomb in To nga, disaster 👆 Earth Earth Is it still eruptting?

First images after massive eruption, tsunami show Tonga covered in ashThick layer of volcanic ash covers Tonga's islands as the first images emerged from the Pacific island nation since it was hit by a massive undersea volcanic eruption and tsunami.

Earth Earth Good Morning, Sir ♥️🍔 Earth We had a bit of a storm surge a day or two ago in CampsBay in CapeTown, where the waves came right over the tidal pool and up to the high wall that separates the road from the beach. This was in SouthAfrica, at the tip of Africa. Wonder if this was because of Tonga.🤔

Earth I've seen dozen of satellite vids of the eruption, but my main question has never been answered. What the elapsed time shown? By the cloud movement and shadow from the setting sun, it's not realtime. Earth Hi, I am a structural engineer from Iran who have many ideas. I have summarized some of my ideas on my twitter(I suggest look at the idea of generating electricity by gravity). I want to work with companies and investors. Do you want to cooperate?

Earth What would that do if you were anywhere near it? GD, Pompeii baby. Earth Why weren't the clouds blown back? Earth Wao Earth Quite the missle detonation for sure. Earth Shame on the liberal government of Australia for not responding to this, as an australian i am ashamed of my country for not helping in this time of need. If it were up to me i would have sent an emergency military convoy with food, power, water and everything else they need.

were acquired between 5 and 8 p.m. local time (04:00 to 07:00 Universal Time) as the volcanic plume expanded upward and outward over the South Pacific. (NASA builds and launches the GOES series of satellites for NOAA.) January 16, 2022 Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission, shows material from the eruption rising to an altitude of 31 kilometers (19 miles). CALIPSO was launched in 2006 by NASA and France’s National Centre for Space Studies (CNES). The eruption was powerful enough to inject volcanic material into the stratosphere, which generally begins above 15 kilometers (9 miles) in this part of the world. Scientists watch closely when volcanic materials reach this relatively dry layer of the atmosphere because particles linger much longer and travel much farther than if they remain in the lower, wetter troposphere. If enough volcanic material reaches the stratosphere, it can start to exert a cooling influence on global temperatures. Despite the extreme height of the January 15 plume, scientists do not expect it to have much impact on climate. Satellite observations indicate the eruption injected about 0.4 teragrams of sulfur dioxide into the upper atmosphere, but the threshold for climate impacts is about 5 teragrams. “It is not unlike a dozen other eruptions that have occurred in the past 20 years in terms of likely impacts on climate,” explained Brian Toon, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Colorado. “It is possible the impacts will be observable in very closely studied data (when the effects of La Niña and El Niño are removed), but the impacts will be too small to be felt by the average person.” January 7 - 17, 2022 JPEG Why this eruption was so violent is not clear yet. “With something this explosive, it is typically a consequence of a large volume of seawater coming into contact with a large reservoir of magma in a confined geologic setting,” explained Daniel Slayback, a NASA scientist who
