“When the call came in from our local medical providers for more masks, gowns, and supply kits, we made it our top priority to mobilize and get these items to them as quickly as possible,” Maggie Snoke, an apparel designer on the innovation team at Under Armour, toldBecause face masks act as the first line of defense against the spread of the virus, they are in critical demand in hospitals across the country.

More than 20 different masks were tested at the Under Armour Lighthouse facility before a winning design was decided upon.“Because we had to work fast, there wasn’t time to overthink it, and that made us more creative,” Snoke said. “We’d sketch something, cut some masks out, try them on, evaluate them, then try the next idea based on what we learned. Having the Lighthouse facility was key, as we could evaluate and iterate quickly in real time.

Using a high-powered knife cutter, the design team can carve out 100 masks at once. Made with breathable, moisture-resistant fabric, the masks are supposed to help stop the spread of the virus by trapping saliva and mucus droplets and preventing people from touching their faces. Under Armour is currently rolling out mask delivery to UMMS. Last month, the company delivered 1,300 face shields to the hospital network. The team’s next challenge is to assemble specially equipped fanny packs for healthcare workers.
