Drug companies are looking at Omicron-specific vaccines and boosters, but should we wait or get a shot now? A medical expert weighs in.

About 50% of eligible Americans have received a booster shot, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but the Pfizer and Moderna news might raise questions regardless.

Individuals who are vaccinated and also recovered from infection appear to have a very high degree of immune protection. The immunity from recovery is variable, though. Someone who became very ill may have a stronger antibody response compared with someone who had an asymptomatic infection, and we don't know how long that immunity lasts. That's why boosters are still recommended for people who have had Covid-19.
