Springtime brings more coyote sightings in California; here’s how to prevent dangerous interactions with the animals

After 22 years at the home, they had never seen a coyote in their residential section of town, said Jason Smolchuck, Gaitan’s boyfriend. The backyard is secured by six-to-eight foot tall fences, he said. , advises people to keep coyotes away by putting garbage in tightly closed containers, removing sources of water, removing attractants like pet food or bird baths, bringing pets in at night, providing secure enclosures for livestock, picking up fallen fruit and covering compost piles.The Mission Viejo Department of Animal Services deals with coyotes every day, according to Stewart. It also serves Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills and Rancho Santa Margarita.
