It’s been working overtime lately—which means it’s overdue for a deep clean.

for tips on actually effective ways to clean your coffee grinder, then tested them for myself. Here are a few tips I learned along the way:This should be obvious, but just in case: Make sure your grinder is unplugged before tinkering with it.

If it’s a blade grinder, you may be able to unscrew and remove the blades from the main grinding cavity. If you can’t remove the blades in your grinder, as I couldn’t with mine, scroll down to the bottom section for cleaning tips. Burr grinders are typically easier to disassemble than blade grinders. Most burrs, or gears, can be unhinged and lifted out of the cavity; others are held in place by a screw or two. Either way, your goal is to remove as much hardware as possible to make way for cleaning all of the nooks and crannies.Once the grinder is empty of gears and blades, bang out as much residue as you can by giving it a few good, hard taps against your countertop.
