I am on the ferry from Manhattan to the Rockaways, sitting on the open top deck, looking out at the Brooklyn Bridge in one direction and the towering buildings of Wall Street in the other. Around me are a few dozen people, masked and social distanced. No one sits closer than a row away. There is a slight breeze coming from the direction of New York Harbor, where off in the distance I can see a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty.
As we pulled out of Manhattan, all of us still masked, I took in the sights: the majestic Brooklyn Bridge, the bucolic promenade of Brooklyn Heights, sailboats dodging in and around each other as they head out to the Atlantic, the gleaming tower of One World Trade Center, where my office is located on the 25th floor, but a building I haven't been inside of since March 11th.
It was also, at moments, a travel back in time. The ferry makes a quick stop at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park, a Brooklyn neighborhood near where my father, now deceased, spent his boyhood. It skims along the beach of Coney Island, giving passengers a great view of the amusement park where my great aunt, also now deceased, took my and my brother one summer day.
Maybe one day I’ll get off and visit Rockaway, hitting the beach or grabbing an order of fried clams at Rockaway Clam Bar or a cheeseburger at Rippers, both of which. Or maybe, one day, I’ll get off at Sunset Park on the way back, and spend an afternoon exploring the neighborhood where my father spent his youth.
What he did again?
