While researching his book 'Breath,' James Nestor participated in a study in which his nose was plugged for 10 days — forcing him to breathe solely through his mouth. 'My stress levels were off the charts. My nervous system was a mess. ... I felt awful.'

Another thing that is really fascinating is that erectile tissue will pulse on its own. So it will close one nostril and allow breath in through the other nostril, then that other nostril will close and allow breath in. Our bodies do this on their own. ...

A lot of people who've studied this believe that this is the way that our bodies maintain balance, because when we breathe through our right nostril, circulation speeds up [and] the body gets hotter, cortisol levels increase, blood pressure increases. So breathing through the left will relax us more. So blood pressure will decrease, [it] lowers temperature, cools the body, reduces anxiety as well. So our bodies are naturally doing this.

Sam Briger and Joel Wolfram produced and edited this interview for broadcast. Bridget Bentz, Molly Seavy-Nesper and Deborah Franklin adapted it for the Web.

Re free divers:

Great interview on NPR.

NPR, now might be time to read the room

Quelle surprise! You do something unnatural with your body for a prolonged period WTF do you think will happen?

oh god i went through a period in my life where i couldn't breathe through my nostrils at all (not from a cold or allergies) and it was terrible. constant stress.

Lost art of breathing? Was there a golden age of breathing?

It’s not funny to make fun of disabilities

I mean...

This does seem to explain Devin's behavior a little..

okiemagic1 okiemagic1 When I get stressed, my BP skyrockets. I've been practicing different breathing techniques while calming my mind. I found if I breath in deeply & slowly for a count of 3, then release slowly, & repeat while taking my BP works, it works to bring my BP back to normal.

patronus53 “I can’t breathe” Catch a clue NPR

This is common knowledge of those who study Jin Shin Jyutsu, an ancient healing touch physio-philosophy.

A psychiatrist I know told me closing my mouth and breathing through my nose would stop a panic attack. There's an added benefit. He was right.

how is something that is a key element of yoga (pranyama) and has been taught continuously for centuries a 'lost art'?

Kundalini yoga knows this.

~ In light of the police's murder of GeorgeFloyd the timing of this article release is extremely insensitive . George Floyd is on video pleading to breathe but could not, no matter how he tried. BlackLivesMatter JusticeForGeorgeFloyd awarenessmatters

So now a 'journalist' is qualified to advise folks on health issues? SixDegreesOfKarenJournalist

rebelpioneer turns out we're all mouthbreathing idiots!!!!

No wonder I hate mouth breathers so much.

That’s ujjayi breathing! yoga

I listened to the show. I think the time would have been better spent interviewing a respiratory therapist instead of promoting someones book.

Racist article in that all this “research” did not uncover that they should look to pranayama? Ignorant racist and culturally appropriated knowledge being advertised on NPR? What a shame!

Whenever my nose gets congested, I start drinking water. After about a quart, my nose usually clears up.

Read this. For your heart and for relaxing.

THIS!! Try wearing an N95 + cloth mask + plastic gown and work 13 hours.

Very, very insightful. Thank you for this interview. nprfreshair

Fascinating read! 👍🤓

Lived with a cat for 10 years. Only discovered I was allergic after she passed. The difference in physical health/stress levels started to become apparent after about 3 weeks. Allergic to all sorts of airborne stuff, apparently. Thankful for diagnosis.

Listened to the broadcast yesterday, a very interesting interview. Who knew breathing through left and right nostrils affect the body differently? Any research on breathing through masks? I wear them at work now and find myself hyperventilating and overheating at times...

That's the crap I deal with every night. Wake up tired as hell.

Explains why I feel stressed with my 340 days (or so) a year of bad allergies (that are being treated in every way possible yet still are bad).

Sounds Familiar.

Bet his breath didn't smell too fresh either during the 10 day study. Mouth breathing dries the mouth out something terrible, allowing bacteria to proliferate. Interesting read.

my nose is blocked most of the time, it's a nightmare
