It was the 1970s and Sears was at its peak. It dominated American retailing. Its corporate headquarters was the tallest building in the world. A job at Sears was a ticket to a long and lucrative career.
But rivals like Walmart were bearing down, shopping patterns were changing and Sears started making a series of wrong bets.
Sad
Sears had the worst online website of all time. They also had worse quality items than jcp. Being tall, Sears catered to petite. Just not my store.
Lovely memory of Sears doing student days in Boston! Will never forget your life saving sales!
I’ll never forget you, Sears Tower! chicago searstower
nikkimcentee17 Fmr JCP pres 90s was bro of my partner. 35 yrs ago we discussed future of retail. I declared online was going to eclipse b&m by mid-late 90s. He disagreed, dismissed my read as unquald b/c I was MIS & genl biz consult 'not a retail expert.' How'd that work out?
In retrospect it is easy to analyze Sears mistakes, top Business Schools would do that, however, in real time, Sears Management was poor, like today's Walmart Management. Watch out Walmart investors.
We will if we watch old eighties movies !
How funny. Just today I was commiserating about how much I miss Sears. From a company that provided complete houses via mail order, to nothing... It says a lot about how times change and leave some behind.
Sears started as a catalog operation. Think Amazon. Why didn’t the executives just go back to that formula? Because I believe the goal was to bleed Sears dry not to save it. Imo.
Bottom line: Shop at Nordstrom’s and someone helps you in that department. They know their merchandise. It’s called SERVICE. Sears removed all of the department cash registers and the employees. Then put one cash register out in the middle of the floor. Left customers on their own
If I had the money I would have bought it and invited the green sustainable entrepreneurs and inventors to replace all existing Sears products with sustainable eco friendly ones. Like everyday department from clothes to electronics and lawn care.
It is ultimately that which people tend to forget yet we remember the names of CEO's and Government Officials whom benefit from others loss. The working man has no place left to turn. That is the truest depressant within all of this. Let's think of the unemployed + destitute 1st.
I'm an old soul. I also remember Woolsworth, Montgomery Wards, Albertsons and many more. The problem with age is we see so many fall as time rolls on. We live in an age where failing businesses has become the status quo. The real victims are not the CEO's but rather the workers.
The internet, the end. It’s funny, because they were the original amazon. Order anything you want from the catalog and it came in the mail.
Interssant article.
Sad
I guess never adapting to a rapidly changing marketplace isn’t a sound business strategy after all!
Thing never said by anyone at Amazon ever: 'What is Sears doing?'
