When NE-YO reflects upon his career, he views the mistakes he made as necessary to his development. “You don't learn anything being good at everything,” he says. “You kinda have to screw up in order to learn and get to the next level.” In fact, if he could tell his younger self anything it would be “don't be afraid to fall” shares the multiple Grammy-winning artist. “Because it’s not even about the fall. It's about getting back up.” ...
A big piece of of his growth is learning to understand his worth. “I primarily write all of my own stuff and am very close to my music. And sometimes it's difficult for me to see what other people view from the outside looking in,” he shares. “So I would not allow my opinion to matter as much as the opinions of the people around me. I would make their opinion more important than my own.” But as he explains, you can't do that to yourself.
At his core NE-YO is also devoted to helping others in need, especially young people who have been in the foster care system. In 2007 he co-founded The Compound Foundation to enhance the well-being of youth growing up in foster care and group homes. “The foster care situation is still nowhere near what it should be. Just in the realm of how these children are treated and the homes in which they wind up,” says NE-YO.
