Long before my first memory is the story of the monkey and the parrot who were madly in love. My first home as an infant was in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and the way my family tells it, our pet monkey fell out the window attempting to kiss our parrot.
My culture is Honduran and Guatemalan from my mom’s side, French Canadian and Italian from my American dad. Attending grade school in the suburbs of Georgia, my textbooks never reflected the girl I was. In all the YA books I read, all of the heroines were white. The films, the covers of every teen magazine—all white. At five years old, I begged my mother to dye my hair blond to match my Barbies and classmates.
Being raised in a homogeneous part of Georgia, I found it hard managing people’s closed-mindedness, and reconciling the parts of myself that didn’t fit neatly into their expectations. I began laughing off intrusive questions about my appearance by saying “I’m a mutt.” My two white-passing brothers didn’t need to offer such explanations.
Yet telling someone from California that they are undoubtedly a New Yorker would be offensive. Telling someone with deep southern roots that they are the same as a northerner would elicit anger. “I like that you have all these different cultures to you,” my best friend, Claudia, told me a few months after meeting. “It makes you interesting.”
The friends and acquaintances I’ve made in Guatemala are patient when I don’t understand a cultural reference, and it doesn’t matter whether I speak broken Spanish or whether traces of English roll off my tongue. I am not made to feel “less than” because I grew up in another country.
