The GOP was once the party of American business. But with populism rising on the right and the Democrats moving left, geraldfseib asks where will corporate America find a new political home?

American business leaders increasingly have been pulled into—or in some cases have dived willingly into—the hot cauldron of today’s political system. How’s that going? Consider events that unfolded within a matter of days recently.

Toyota Motor Corp. publicly defended its decision to keep giving money to Republicans who refused to certify the 2020 election results, only to reverse course a few days later under public pressure.

Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, President Joe Biden issued an executive order instructing government agencies to take 72 different actions to rein in big corporations and went after Facebook over its role in the spread of vaccine disinformation. His administration also engineered an international agreement establishing a global minimum corporate tax and made Lina Khan, a well-known antitrust crusader, the head of the Federal Trade Commission, much to the delight of progressives.

Like other institutions, the U.S. business community is being buffeted by the angry partisan winds coursing through the country. But this rapid-fire series of hits illustrates an even deeper problem for corporate leaders: The Republican and Democratic parties are both undergoing a historic transformation, which increasingly makes the business community a political orphan, without a comfortable home in either party.

Corporate America needs a new political strategy, but it is having trouble developing one.

GeraldFSeib Shit take. Clear as day that business aligns with the left because they are more gullible and consume more products. Stick up a colourful flag for a month and you have done well. Literal smooth brains.

GeraldFSeib Modern business has its home on the left. Robber baron type of business has it home with the GOP populists.

GeraldFSeib Corporations did it to themselves by literally attacking the people in the GOP. What did you think was going to happen 🤣

GeraldFSeib We in the middle want a new third party. The country desperately needs it. The Nova Party. That is where corporate must go.

GeraldFSeib I was corporate America’s biggest fan and have my life savings invested there. Yet in issue after issue after issue after issue they have racialized, politicized or traumatized American culture trying to placate a rabid hate mob. I will no longer defend American corporations.

GeraldFSeib 'Democrats moving left'? 🤣
