How Celeste crafted the Oscar-nominated song “Hear My Voice” for The Trial of the Chicago 7.

During the months of April and May, while the U.K. was under coronavirus lockdown, the 26-year-old rising star was writing a song inspired by a single line given to her byAfter seeing her perform live early last year, the Oscar-nominated composer invited her to collaborate on a song he was hoping might work for the upcomingPemberton’s invitation came at a very abnormal time for everyone.

Though she makes the kind of music Americans tend to think of as quintessentially British—atmospheric and jazzy songs in the vein of, to a Black Jamaican father and a white English mother. Her parents separated when she was less than two years old, and she moved to Brighton with her mother, where she spent her teen years combing the city’s charity shops and developing a keen sense of style.

Onstage, her bold throwback style comes through, and her music can feel timeless. Yet she also has been forged by more modern experiences. She began uploading songs to Soundcloud in 2014, and eventually found herself contributing vocals to EDM tracks bywhich was released in January, she proves her skill for making music born of a love for the past that isn’t content to simply revere it.

She might not be able to celebrate in a room with all of her collaborators on April 25, but it’s still the beginning of a new era in which she might not want to be so hidden anymore. She seemed a bit disappointed that she wouldn’t be out on Oscar night to meettwo actresses who helped inspire her performance style. But when it comes to the future, she really wants to get out of the “contained environments” of life during a pandemic.
