How true is the first statement? I'd like to see DATA about the state of all the NY hospitals especially in NYC. I see no data in the article pertaining to NY yet I have seen that the Javits Center and the hospital ship Comfort have plenty of excess capacity.

It's not that CA did well, Cuomo and DeBlasio just really screwed up timing of shutdown. CA also had advantage of lower population density and warmer weather.
Not having a crowded subway system thru all its dense population centers probably helped, too.
California has a lot of older retirees and most of them have the good sense to social distance during normal flu season.
