received almost as much buzz as the collections themselves. “We’re like the beauty art freaks,” Frausto says of these relationships, which have developed from a shared desire to push more accepted ideas about beauty and fashion forward.

Growing up in Orange County, California, in the late ’90s, Frausto shared a small apartment with a large family originally from a remote mountain town outside of Mexico City. “You can’t even look it up,” he says of the area forgotten by Google Maps. The close quarters created close relationships with his mother, grandmother, and aunts, and allowed him to witness their elaborate beauty rituals. “They were all just so glamorous; I was mesmerized by the transformation process.

After high school, Frausto attended beauty school in Los Angeles, and at 18, during a vacation to New York with friends, he simply decided to stay. He landed in a Williamsburg house full of drag queens, including a makeup artist who allowed Frausto to assist him on jobs. A hard-earned but regimented position at Vidal Sassoon—where Frausto came up through the academy system—led him to Bumble and Bumble and a spot on the Fashion Week team of editorial veteran and Bumble stylist Jimmy Paul.

Buzzing from the late-afternoon caffeine, Frausto gets animated when talking about his trajectory, which he does with a wide-eyed wonder that makes him seem like any other New York art-punk, musing on ideas. The lack of ego is refreshing, but it belies his time behind the chair, which no amount of Instagram virality can replicate. “He does his homework,” says Luar’s Lopez, “and when you do your homework, when you come to class, you know how to turn it.
